SEO VS SEM

It still amazes me how many people can't distinguish between SEO and SEM. As you point out elsewhere on Guru of Search, SEO = Search Engine Optimization, and SEM = Search Engine Marketing. SEO is only one little part of SEM. SEO is the internal optimizations you do to your website to make it ready for your search campaign.

SEO is more about optimizing the internal structure of the website itself, so it can be readily spidered by search engines. SEM, on the other hand, is concerned with all the marketing around your website - from social media to organic search ranking and traffic building efforts.
