We've all heard that external links leak PageRank. In other words, when you link to a web address outside your own website you are, from a search engines point of view, giving credit to that webpage. The more external links you have on one page, the more credit is not only being given out to those pages, but (partially in order to combat link trading) the more credit is at the same time being taken away from your page.. read more »
rel="nofollow" tags were initially introduced by Google to help prevent comment spam. In other words, to prevent spammers from bombarding your site with links to their in the hope of gaining link popularity and Page Rank points. The problem is that many developers are using nofollow to "hoard PR" (hoard PageRank), which may hurt them in the long run... read more »
A one-way link is a link from an external site to your site, with no return link from your site. Why do search engines place more weight on one-way links than they do on two-way links? In part to combat link trading, or link swapping, which involves exchanging links simply for the purpose of increasing your search engine ranking. A one-way link is usually legitimate, but if a site links back to you, there's no guarantee you weren't involved in making that link happen... read more »
An important element of search marketing involves building as many relevant inbound links to your pages as possible. What does this mean?
